Femtosecond Laser Processing of Nitinol

The effects of femtosecond laser machining on surface characteristics and subsurface microstructure of a Nitinol alloy were studied. The femtosecond laser machining produced an average surface roughness of 0.2 μm. A re-deposited layer of 7 μm and a hardened layer of 70 μm were also resulted from the machining.

Processing microstructure on film by femtosecond laser

Selective laser patterning of thin films in a multilayer film is an emerging technology for fabrication of MEMS devices. A 775 nm Ti:sapphire laser (130 fs, 1 kHZ) was used to irradiate the thin film stacks with variations in process parameters such as feed rate and numerical aperture of objective lens. Femtosecond laser patterning of Au/Cr films which have the same thickness of about 1000 nm a...

Analysis of Optical Emission towards Optimisation of Femtosecond Laser Processing

Recent research and development on the femtosecond laser has shown that it is a powerful tool for high precision micromachining. However, femtosecond laser-material interaction is fast and complex due to its ultrashort pulse duration. As the laser-induced plasma possesses useful information to understand the physical mechanism of laser processing, we investigate the optical emission during femt...

Applanation-free femtosecond laser processing of the cornea

A novel approach for applanation-free femtosecond refractive surgery with the help of a contact liquid layer is presented. A laboratory device for performing corneal procedures is described based on a femtosecond-laser system which has been tested and evaluated by processing ex vivo pig eyes. With its help, flap cuttings for different flap thicknesses were performed. The accomplished corneal su...

Materials processing with a tightly focused femtosecond laser vortex pulse.

In this Letter we present the first (to our knowledge) demonstration of material modification using tightly focused single femtosecond laser vortex pulses. Double-charge femtosecond vortices were synthesized with a polarization-singularity beam converter based on light propagation in a uniaxial anisotropic medium and then focused using moderate- and high-NA optics (viz., NA=0.45 and 0.9) to abl...
